Veering somewhat off topic:
1930s movies were sometimes interesting, but by the 1940s Hollywood had their game together. They made big leaps in technology and general craft. I was watching The Maltese Falcon again last night. I still can't believe how good that movie is. The '40s were the golden age of directors and studio management. Just watch The Maltese Falcon sometime for its cinematic professionalism -- the music, cinematography, acting chemistry/timing -- it all just clicked in the hands of people like John Huston, Michael Curtiz, William Wyler, etc. Compare their competence and authority with the adolescent slobbering and groping of today. Quite the falling off.
