spartacus, spartacus
this movie...
so much good and bad.
first off, the cinematography is tops. its the most realistic recreation of roman home interiors ive yet to see in any consumable media. most the things in the homes are actual artistic perfections of realism. its like looking through time. a few scenes really come together perfectly as a window to the past. the tile floors, the stone used for trimmings and other features, most of the furniture. though naturally there are also a few moments where certain props or details were not exactly good. though very much forgivable.
the battle scenes were all top dollar. huge costume budget, great direction. this is really a first in many things. it easily reminds me of something like braveheart but of course done much earlier.
next we have the supporting cast,
they are marvelous. most the dialog is well above average, which is great, and at times the dialog was absolute tops.
but then, by god, you have kirk douglas as the leading actor. it almost ruins the entire thing.
i dont have anything against kirk, but this was just not his film at all.
overall because of this, the movie almost feels like a reject of ben hur. its totally sad.
the imdb score of 7.9 feels a bit overrated. this seems more like a 7.4 or 7.3 easily
great film but really nowhere near its potential. a bit short on many other aspects
