Agree on pretty much all counts. Jean Simmons was a bit miscast, imo, but she made the part work. Tony Curtis was the right choice in movies like Sweet Smell of Success but not in epics like Spartacus. Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, and Peter Ustinov were all very good.
If you like Roman interiors, I highly recommend the HBO series Rome.
