fallout 3 is immensely underrated
its easily bethesdas best title.
ive only played the game once way back when it was new and beat it. there is just so much i dont remember or didnt play at the time.
bethesda was really edgy or risk-ay in this title. much of the dialog is average level of edgy but then you run into the good stuff more often than not, and its pretty damn funny.
the apex to all this silliness was luring a child out of this underground city of children and selling her to an awaiting slaver who takes her to a black pimp by the name of "eulogy jones".
its pretty silly of a quest. you have to lure the child out by exploiting her innocence.
the game is actually brimming with content. bethesda was taking the newly acquired fallout ip very seriously. its also the largest bethesda game world to date, about 3 times the size of skyrim, and at least twice that of oblivion. though i remember the gameworld being rather dull when playing it in 2006 or whenever it was released. but today, especially with mods, and not just focusing on the main quest, i find all the underground and indoor areas interesting. many subway systems, even outside of the city to explore which lead to interesting quests or other discoveries. and the tunnels themselves also have decent variety in design.
this game is so much better than new vegas. im honestly having fun with this, and i cant believe ive forgotten about it for so long this way to where new vegas is still like second nature to me, when this other amazing game is totally a mystery.
im running very few mods for it too.
the most impactful mods are the custom run speed, because dear god the default movement speed is so slow. absolute necessity to set your own number in xedit. 160.00000 or 180.00000 speeds everything up, not just you, to the point where you actually move at a good pace but not comically so. huge impact on enjoyability here.
then of course i installed this mod called "fellout" which removes all the green gamma lighting on everything. and then i installed the flora overhaul with the trees. everything is forested but it doesnt seem out of place or different. its just the right amount of clutter to add that little missing extra the environment always seem to be lacking. it makes a large difference but not in a
and finally, the fourth most impactful mod would be the custom difficulty.
i just xedit the "normal" mode to be 1x damage taken / given, then hard at 2x/2x, and hardest at 3x/3x.
the 2x/2x is absolutely the right spot. you definitely get hit hard, but also hit others hard. you are not unloading full clips and full bars of AP in VATS just to do hardly any damage like i vanilla.
this was more of a problem in fo3 than any other bethesda game. all the weapons are particularly underpowered in this game than in any other.
even the 2x damage given is almost not enough. but its actually just right.
oh and definitely need to set the perk gain at 2x per level, though i manually did this right at level 10. and it works perfect.
the rest of the character mechanics are quite good. i though being limited to 10 points in special and 100 points in any skill with no possible way to overlap the limit would be underwhelming but its actually surprisingly decent in a simplistic yet effective way.
having a total blast with this game. also manually doubled the enemy spawns at level 20. with the level cap being 30.
totally works!
