I thought it was an interesting concept: Gregory Peck as an outlaw with a submerged vein of virtue in a slightly noir western. The small-scale siege is common in westerns, but it usually involves hostile Indians. In this one, Apaches appear only briefly and turn out to be friendly. I like that -- not the representation of Native Americans as wonderful and noble, which they often were not, but the idea that the conflict stays focused on the original participants. Peck is really good as a conflicted bad guy. Anne Baxter is almost perfect as the feisty tomboy, sabotaging every conventional idea of the besieged lady in the keep.

Peck's part in Yellow Sky reminds me a little of the bad guy he played in Duel in the Sun. I prefer the Yellow Sky role because I'm a fan of the reclaimable villain story line.
