RE: MN callout
I use a large very soft natural bristle brush without a metal ferrule. The key is soft and gentle.
You can probably get by with those wood handled disposable brushes that they bulk-pack at The Petty Home Despot.
It would not be advised generally, but you can get a whisper of water on it to help pick up dust. The problem bein that many *old* varishes are either hydroscopic or otherwise bloom when exposed to moisture. Wax-based varnish blooms can be touched up with a hint of xylene, but the gloss can be different. A restorer told me to never get the brush wet loaded with xylene and try to just let the brush off-gas vapor onto the surface.
If this is the shroud-of-turin fagile, don't touch it and spend the money on a conservator. This way you have someone else to blame.
If it is something you made in high school, you can use off-the shelf like Windsor-Newton Picture cleaner or look at the data-sheet (looks like copaibe balsam; dipentene; and pine oil). I think these can affect varish layers, so beware and test.
I used amonia to get mold off one of my things I didi in college that was ina damp basement for a while.
