Since the Romans were living in mud huts in the 8th century BC, and since they never did amount to much as exploratory sailors, I favor the alternative theory that the Olmecs were influenced by ancient astronauts. In fact, it would not surprise me if an advance extraterrestrial civilization set up a fake Mesoamerican culture to create future disinformation about alien visitations.
