RE: Coagulated mod?
I love the sprites and limited color palette of classic Doom and the Build games (recognizing that the latter raised the bar a bit). It took me forever to figure out why I could never achieve the same look as the rendered box and promotion shots, but I got over it.
The graphical limitations and primitive palettes resulted in a brighter, more carnivalesque experience than you got later, I assume because the newer "3D" objects and actors didn't leave much in the VRAM budget. It's only fairly recently that I'm seeing something like that primary color clown party again. Doom Eternal is pretty colorful, but Shadow Warrior 3 is off the chain, absolutely popping with bright, fun colors painted over sophisticated models. So ironically, what began as a kind of limitation has, in a strange way, resurfaced thanks to graphics cards with NASA level processing and honking VRAM allotments.
I remember admiring the 3D models and other advancements in Quake, only later realizing why the grimdark levels were awash in brown, gray, and black. The Quake demo movies playing as you started the game were the first time I had ever seen mouselook. It took me a while to figure that out, too. As I recall, mouselook wasn't a default setting. Wasn't that enabled by adding a line in the autoexec.cfg?
