For some god forsaken reason I stayed up late rewa
and was reminded just how much better the book it's based on is.
The director's cut at least acknowledges the book far more.
There's some memorable lines in the movie that aren't pulled from the text, and the practical effects have held up pretty well. Amazing work of cinematography.
But the book has a message. The movie is really just glam that borrows most of its credibility from the book and doesn't really return much of it.
Not really worth losing sleep over, although it was nostalgic. I didn't see it when it came out. Only a few years ago for the first time, so to be fair I never really saw it in proper social/cultural context I guess.
