He was right for his time, as was Samuel Johnson, who
also picked on the Metaphysicals
. It took
T.S. Eliot
, the Modernist Period, and New Critics like Cleanth Brooks and John Crowe Ransom to restore Donne and his pards to a state of legitimacy. I've always liked Donne. A good poet is a technician, and Donne was one of the best. Another was Alexander Pope, though he was more to Johnson's liking and probably would have balked at Donne.
