He was right for his time, as was Samuel Johnson, who also picked on the Metaphysicals. It took T.S. Eliot, the Modernist Period, and New Critics like Cleanth Brooks and John Crowe Ransom to restore Donne and his pards to a state of legitimacy. I've always liked Donne. A good poet is a technician, and Donne was one of the best. Another was Alexander Pope, though he was more to Johnson's liking and probably would have balked at Donne.
