I never got much into poetry despite (or because of) the classes I took, but my wife is a huge fan of Modernist poetry (especially Eliot, Stevens, and Marianne Moore) and I ended up reading some of her favorites just to hold a conversation. You're right about good poets being technicians. There's an elegant precision in great poetry you don't see often even in great prose--I'd maybe say that McCarthy's Suttree is the exception to the rule here, but you could probably argue that it's really just one long prose poem.
