RE: Horizon Zero Dawn ruins you
Dell, I like Mankind Divided so far. I'm going to have to get used to the comparatively crowded and close maps after spending so much time in Zero Dawn's sprawling world. I hugely enjoyed DE Human Revolution, and Mankind Divided looks fairly similar.
You're very correct about the Zero Dawn story. Ben McCaw was lead writer, but Guerilla would probably credit John Gonzalez with most of the narrative sophistication, which I think is pretty impressive for a video game. Gonzales, as you probably know, was lead writer on Fallout: New Vegas, but I think Zero Dawn is better. I agree that some of the discoveries and conclusions are pretty mind-boggling or at least intellectually demanding for a video game.
This is another reason I feel a kind of parental affection for Aloy. I made light of the "science project" thing above, but her discovery of what she is -- in contrast with what she wants -- would be quite shattering for a nineteen-year-old with her upbringing. Anyway, it's an interesting direction, and it makes me think we might see more grown-up writing in at least a few big budget video games in the coming years. I won't hold my breath, but it's a strong possibility.
