I really hate it when someone has an opportunity to inject life into a dead, old, and buried franchise and they break out the same 4 characters. Not only do they miss a real opportunity for developing something interesting, they also make you acutely aware of the fan service.
The idea of those being bit parts is a plus, which would have been much more plussier if they didn't feel the need to even include them at all.
Kind of like EVERYONE in half life 2: they took all the red shirts from HL1 and made them main characters who inexplicably all wind up in the same gulag 1/2-way across the world.
