RE: Ghost of Tsushima
It seems to me that the game overcomplicates combat with the best of intentions. I have no real difficulty wiping out patrols or groups of enemies in scripted story events. You have tons of options, and even a big squad of brutes have no chance against Jin and all his ghost business. I'm just searching for a way to make combat simpler, more elegant and reliable. This could be achieved by making the A and D keys strafe instead of turn. You already have the mouse for turning the character. Why do you need the left and right directional keys to turn him as well? I'll tell you. If you had strafing instead of turning, the combat would be ridiculously easy and the console peasantry would not be able to make "git gud" posts.
All right. I got around the turning with practice. Not a huge thing. But there's still a soft lock on mechanism that's very dangerous when you need to break away from a melee enemy and target archers, or you need to break away from melee enemy X and go after a more threatening enemy Y. Or you need to dodge/break away and nothing happens because you're school-pasted onto a particular enemy and the game doesn't want you to stop fighting him.
It's really spooky when you're used to having complete control of a toon.
