Subject: RE: Path of Exile 2

A minor update. ILA has made about 75 characters, but his witch seems to be pretty successful. I parked my sorceress and started a ranger, which I much prefer. We are almost at the end of Act 2, having done everything except the ascension trials and the final act boss.

I'm really pretty indifferent about the ascension business. While undergoing the trials, you have to avoid getting hit. Every nick and ding subtracts a resource called "honor," which is calculated based on some combination of your health and Borderlands-like shield. If at any point you lose all your honor, you have to do all the trials over. This seems rather unreasonable to me, but it's characteristic of POE2 as a whole. It's a fairly punishing game.

Bosses can be relatively challenging. Some people say they're like Dark Souls bosses. Others dispute this comparison. I wouldn't know, not having played one minute of a souls game. I just know that the major bosses have moves/tells/telegraphs and so forth that you have to learn. I hate this crap. It's not a fight as much as it's choreography. But you just muddle through it somehow. (I must say: I do like most of the bosses for their creativity, though I wish they didn't have the health pool of the entire population of Brazil.)

The ranger uses lightning predominantly, but I took out some insurance by doing some poison speccing and throwing in a cold skill or two. This turned out to be wise. I need a lot more single-target damage, but I would rather not do any respecs on my passive tree, as this is quite expensive.

I laugh every time I see a player wearing some of the game's ridiculous microtransaction cosmetics. If you get more than one of these idiots standing around a merchant, the particle effects and wing-flapping get so bad you can't see what you're doing. The game lets you buy your own "hideout," but I'll bet it doesn't come with merchants. The early access release comes with 300 fake game bucks, which translates into a "free" $30, which I used to buy stash tabs. I don't plan to give them any real money apart from the rip-off $30 "support" game price. I would say, however, that this was $30 well spent. What I've seen so far has been really entertaining.
