Ah ArmA 2, how I love you
My squad comes under fire from a surprise "Chedaki" ambush during a lengthy escape through a forest after a botched attack, quickly heading for the nearest piece of cover I begin firing back while my 3 teammates do the same. Figuring we're way outgunned, I begin to radio for my only available support option: Emergency helicopter extraction, piloted by none other than my good buddy Maddox, who you get to meet right from the start of the game.
*Razor this is Star Force 21, copy that, helo is inbound, out*
The time between that phrase and the first barely audible thumps of the chopper's blades cutting through the wind were the longest 30 seconds ever, as the 4 of us were now coming under fire by some machine guns mounted on technicals and UAZs, in addition to the slowly but steadily advancing soldiers. But that didn't matter, as Maddox's chopper was growing louder and louder with every passing second and we would soon be rescued.
The area in which the fighting was taking place is the edge of a forest, to one side was dense foliage, which is where the enemy was coming from. The other side was a clearing, which I almost thought we could sprint through while the enemy was bogged down by all the trees but the lack of any effective cover made me think twice.
The chopper was practically on top of us now, I, and probably my teammates as well, were running low on ammunition. Now, think about it: You're a chopper pilot tasked with rescuing a friendly squad that is taking fire at the edge of a forest. You've got a choice between landing at a nice clearing or trying to somehow land on top of a tree. The choice should be pretty easy, right?
Well, in ArmA 2's case, choice of landings is indeed rocket science, which as Judge Judy has taught me, is when the scientists find out things about space.
So figuring, what the hell, I'll just go inspect the crash for shits and giggles, I can see right there under the overturned wreck that was once called a helicopter, Maddox's corpse sticking out. At this exact instant my radio crackles to life:
*Razor team this is Swordsman, Star Force 21 is down!*
*Slight pause*
*Maddox is OK though, I'm afraid you're on your own for a while, out*
I went through a wide range of feelings, mind you not for very long as the wreck somehow managed to explode a second time, blowing my puzzled head away a couple of miles downrange.
