For you, paying $140/month is probably overkill. Unless you have some chronic malady that you haven't shared, you don't need to do it. You're probably better off going to like, Blue Cross Blue Shield and buying individual catastrophic coverage, which will probably cost you $30/month and will cover things like hospitalizations minus a deductible that's between $500 & $1000. You could put the remaining $110 in a savings account and hold onto it in case of emergency.
Thing is, it won't really be $110 remainder because I assume your employer is doing pre-tax deductions. You'll lose out a little there, but the difference probably won't impact your savings much.
Most people are content to just do the weekly/biweekly deduction thing, which is easiest, covers the most so you don't have to put much effort into it, and benefits guys like me since you're basically kicking in for my expenses.
