A simpler tax system is what's needed. We already have progressive taxes, and the IRS tax code is 75474374 pages long. When something is that complex, there are going to be flaws and loopholes. Fixed tax is ideal because it's easier to maintain (KISS), and enforce. Like I've said a million times before 10% of $100,000 is much more than 10% of $1,000. Tax write offs need to be eliminated.

Looking at most partially-socialized countries with "free" health coverage, the working class has to foot a much larger chunk of their pay in order to fund government operations. With income tax around 50% in most of these countries, it no longer looks appealing. Not only that, but service is as lousy (just in a different way) as that in the states. Pick your poison. The only people that benefit are the sickly poor (I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing)

Also, "social" programs were a contributing factor to the current state of the economy. For instance, the government mandated "equal opportunity housing & lending". With banks partaking in the program, they were authorized their own demise. Don't misinterpret what I said: I stated it was a contributing factor, NOT the ONLY factor.
