Subject: RE: Any future Mass Effect 2 players

They've shaped the gameplay a bit into a serviceable third person shooter, except in Bioware's rush to improve how it plays it seems they forgot all about the RPG aspect of it. If the first game was an RPG lite, this is more akin to an RPG hybrid like System Shock or Deus Ex, I'd go as far as calling it a very dialog heavy third person shooter where you have the choice to be a saint, an asshole or just not care, much like the first game.

Although to be fair to Deus Ex, it usually gave you 3 choices when overcoming a problem: Use guns, hack or lockpick something or use stealth and the environment to avoid confrontation. In Mass Effect 2 you mainly just shoot the ever loving shit out of everything, sometimes in a cutscene before the actual shooting even begins. You might think about using one of your pointless powers or techs, which might spawn a little peashooting robot that dies 3 seconds later or make your target flail about uncontrollably like a futuristic, robotic Michael J. Fox but really, you'll forget about all that useless BS most of the time as you're skillfully braining everyone with a pistol from a mile away.

This is, of course, after 30 minutes of dialog, which makes me wonder why talk to a guy for 30 minutes if I'm just gonna end up shooting him anyway.

After going through it once, I'm very confident that I can beat it in normal difficulty without spending a single skill point and using the basic equipment you get at the start as the player's ability to score constant headshots completely trumps everything else, all those upgrades mean precisely dick if anything that gets within 20 meters of you gets its head blown off just as well with the crap guns you get at the start than with the fancier stuff you'll find later on.

On the plus side, the final battle is dynamic in that your 10 or so team mates will either make it or bite it depending on how you played the game, so if you play your cards right you can tentatively get all those 10 talkative assholes killed and they wont bother you again in Mass Effect 3. Curious about this, I reloaded the final save and did things a bit differently, discovering all sorts of silly and hilarious ways for your teammates to die: One guy can get killed by a flying sheet of metal before they even get out of the ship that takes them to the battle, another one will be revealed to have dropped dead after the final battle in this sad little "You fuckers left me guarding this door and forgot about me" cutscene.

Anyway, if the first game bored you, this isn't going to change your mind at all, it's the same basic formula executed a little differently.
