My review
Excellent werewolf movie -- probably the best I've ever seen.
As a mainstream AAA product, it's pretty average.
As with most movies now, the last reel is pretty dumb, but it could have been much dumber.
Del Toro is quite a lot better than the reviewers are going on about. So is the rest of the cast.
The production values are quite good -- decent Danny Elfman score, very good period sets, good costumes, decent and appropriate cinematography, better than decent sound.
The plot was far better than I thought was going to be. It was very integrated and organized, though I can see how following it would have been a challenge for most of the ADD crack baby reviewers.
The transformation effects were very good, much better than those in American Werewolf in London. I don't know why reviewers are comparing the new ones unfavorably.
Is it a new classic? No. Is it a bad movie? No. It's a better-than-average period remake of an original that was interesting for its time but has perhaps become too venerated.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 simstars.
