Look for bandits and looters with prisoners.
Sim doesn't say it: trainer and surgery are the 2 most important skills there are.
trainer is cumulative over all your companions, all other "party" skills take into account only the highest stat. Train everyone as similarly as possible because they *will* abandon you if your party morale drops below 75 or so. Even if you are laying waste to armies 3 times your size with no casualties for months at a time, your party morale will plummet to zero when you ride over to the next village to by some cattle.
