It's just a regular 8 player server I run, which I started back in the L4D1 days so me and 2 other friends could play in peace without getting bitched at by 8 year olds, or try some bottomless pit jumping shenanigans without getting vote kicked out by clanners. I've since migrated it to L4D2.
I have it tied to a steam group I created, to join the server all you need to do is join the steam group (Named something like hfbl4d, I forget) and the server will then show up on the main screen when you start the game, and can be picked by starting a new campaign, and picking "Steam group server" from the options. The first time anyone listed on the steam group joins, they should be automatically added to the server administrators list, which among other things grants you vote kick immunity.
