LIBEL AND LIES!
I actually hadn't read that article before, and creepy Derek Smart summonings aside, is an interesting read that I believe applies today even more so than back in 2005. I stopped paying attention to the flame wars a long time ago and started listening to the guy when he was actually being rational and not being constantly trolled on, which back then was 99% of the time. There were many times when Smart had my attention with an interesting or insightful post regarding the game industry.
As the article points out, he used to post at Blues News (Which was the only forum in common between him and me) but stopped sometime ago due to most Derek Smart and Battlecruiser related threads spiraling completely out of control after 5 or so posts. The last thing I knew about him was that Blue had to ban him temporarily from the forums along with some of the instigators, which was rather surprising as Blue is somewhat famous for never banning anyone.
Smart obviously has a great deal of conviction towards what he does and if he and his team had the actual talent to back them up, they would probably be responsible for keeping the space sim genre single handedly alive. Unfortunately, there's more to a space sim than unnecessary complexity and getting irritated at people who can't figure out your game.
