I never actually did it, but that's how I understand it.
I can say this: DOSbox is the best DOS VM environment there is. I was able to get a DOS-based bootloader to run just as fast as if I was running it in actual DOS. The best part was that I was able to use a USB->RS232 adapter for which there were only windows drivers.
