It's not that I can't aim with the sticks or anything, the game has this hilariously generous auto aiming mechanic where if you press the "Aim down sight" button, not only does it automatically put the crosshair to center mass of whatever you generally pointing at, it also tracks the target for you which is incredibly lame when you think about it. You can disable this option, but then you won't be able to hit anything.
The horses control pretty much the same as Agro from Shadow of the Colossus, right down to spurring it with the A button and holding it down for cruuuuuuise control. I'm a little over the half way point of the game and have only thrown myself off a cliff while on a horse because the dumbass failed to stay on the bridge I was aiming at. Though the resulting ragdoll-y fall was well worth it.
